The Leader of the Year awards organised by Sing Tao News Corporation Limited celebrated its 28th anniversary on 20th September, 2022.
The awards presentation ceremony, co-hosted by Sing Tao Daily, Headline Daily and The Standard was held at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong on 20th September, 2022. Winners of five distinguished Leader of the Year categories were honored at the gala event.
Sing Tao News Corporation Limited Co-Chairman Mr Kwok Ying-shing said that despite facing multiple challenges, winners this year had shown their resilience and bravery in building Hong Kong and contributing to society. The ceremony also marked towards 85th anniversary of Sing Tao News Corporation Limited and the 25th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong.
Sing Tao News Corporation Limited Co-Chairman Mr Choi Karson Ka-tsan said Sing Tao will continue to bear its social responsibility in reflecting citizens' opinions and monitoring the authorities' governance.
Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, The Honourable John KC Lee – the Guest of Honor – congratulated the winners and said "only by cooperation can you bring a synergy of one-plus-one-greater-than-two.”
Ms Nisa Leung, Managing Partner of Qiming Venture Partners, won in the Commerce & Industry/Finance category.
Playright Children's Play Association was named the Community/Public Affairs/Environment & Conservation category winner.
Education/Professions/Technology & Innovation category winners were Professor Jiaya Jia, Founder and Chairman of SmartMore Corporation Limited & Dr Xiaoyong Shen, Co-Founder and CEO of SmartMore Corporation Limited.
Sports/Culture/Performing Arts category winners were Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Hong Kong, China Athletes and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Hong Kong, China Athletes.
Young Entrepreneur category, the winners were Mr Norman Cheung, Co-Founder and CEO of Boxful and Mr Carl Wu, Co-Founder of Boxful.
The awards recognise and encourage the achievements of Hong Kong's most exemplary individuals, who have made outstanding contributions toward the city's success and prosperity, linking it to Greater China and the international community, establishing role models for the younger generation, and inspiring the public to strive for the best to help develop the HKSAR.
Awards were presented by The Honourable John KC Lee, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; The Honourable Paul Chan Mo-po, Financial Secretary of The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr Paul Lam Ting-kwok, Secretary for Justice of The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr Rimsky Yuen, Chairman of the Panel of Judges of Leader of the Year 2021 and Ir Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Board Chairman of Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited.
Government officials and respected industry leaders also attended the event. Guests included Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Mr Christopher Hui Ching-yu, Secretary for Development Ms Bernadette Linn Hon-ho, Commissioner of Police Mr Raymond Siu Chak-yee, Commissioner of Customs and Excise Ms Louise Ho Pui-shan and the Director of Immigration Mr Au Ka-wang also attended.
This year’s judging panel, chaired by Senior Counsel of Temple Chambers Mr Rimsky Yuen Kwok-keung, was formed by recognised experts from varied backgrounds. Panel members include Former Permanent Secretary of Financial Services and Treasury (Financial Services) of the Government of the HKSAR and Former President of Youth Outreach Ms Au King-chi; Permanent Honorary President of The Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong Mr Chan Wing-kee; Non-Executive Director of Hang Lung Properties Limited Mr Philip Chen Nan-lok; President of Legislative Council of the HKSAR Mr Andrew Leung; Former Dean of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong Professor Gabriel Leung; Emeritus Professor of Surgery of The Chinese University of Hong Kong Professor Arthur Li Kwok-cheung; Chairman of Elderly Commission, Chairman of Action Committee Against Narcotics & Immediate Past President of World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) Dr Donald Li.
Since its launch in 1994, the awards have acknowledged more than 100 outstanding leaders for their contributions to Hong Kong and for serving as an inspiration to the younger generations.

Ms Nisa Leung, Managing Partner of Qiming Venture Partners, founded the Shenzhen-based venture capital firm in 2006. Since then Qiming has been one of the leading venture capital firms investing in medical and health-care companies. Ms Leung’s company has been investing in Chinese Covid vaccine-developing companies, hoping to contribute to human health. Named the winner in the Commerce & Commerce & Industry/Finance category, she thanks the judging panel for recognizing her efforts. She also thanked her team, saying it “has been turning ‘impossible’ to ‘possible’ and letting more people benefit from medical technology.” Ms Leung added: “A good medical and health-care investment is my best gift in contributing to humans and society.”

Established by later philanthropist Mrs Anne Marden in 1987, Playright Children’s Play Association has always pursued a mission to back activities for youngsters. It provided a range of services such as conducting assessments of play needs, creating resources and operating spaces, professional training, safety assessments, promoting child participation and engaging in advocacy work. The association has around 229,630 beneficiaries, including children, parents and medical and design professionals. As the winner in the Community/Public Affairs/ Environment & Conservation category, Chairperson of Executive Committee Ms Anita Ma pledged to keep delivering for youngsters.

Smartmore Corporation Limited in Hong Kong Science Park is a unicorn founded in 2019 by Founder and Chairman Professor Jiaya Jia and Co-Founder and CEO Dr Xiaoyong Shen. It focuses on smart artificial intelligence (AI) manufacturing systems for a variety of industries, such as aircraft assembly and optical components. Receiving the award in the Education/Professions/ Technology & Innovation category this year, Professor Jia said the award is encouraging and hopes to move ahead with integrating technologies in industries in the Greater Bay Area. Professor Jia, a professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, advised the youth to be aggressive in contributing to the development of Hong Kong.

The Sports/Culture/Performing Arts category winners were Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games Hong Kong, China Athletes and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games Hong Kong, China Athletes. The Hong Kong delegation of 46 Olympic Games athletes broke the city’s record by winning six medals – one gold, two silver and three bronze – in Tokyo, despite the Olympics being postponed for a year due to the pandemic. The 24 Paralympic Games athletes won two silver and three bronze medals. The Chef de Mission of the Hong Kong, China Delegation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Mr Pui Kwan-kay said that the never-give-up spirit shared by the athletes reflected Hongkongers’ Lion Rock Spirit.

Hong Kong-based Boxful is a door-to-door mini-storage provider offering box, mini and self-storage services, which enable customers to store unwanted items in warehouses. Since its launch in January 2015 by Mr Norman Cheung, Co-Founder and CEO of Boxful and Mr Carl Wu, Co-Founder of Boxful. Boxful has now expanded the business to international moving, covering places that include the United Kingdom, Canada and Taiwan. It is described as “the next unicorn that will bring up a technology revolution to the industry.” As the winner in Young Entrepreneur category, Mr Cheung thanked his team, investors, customers and said that they will continue to raise the profile of the city’s business community through creativity.
